2010's Summer art contest!

Post by shalom itay » Sat May 08, 2010 3:01 pm

Well the time has finally come for a new art contest, so hold tight!

The sounds of the massive saws and the bright flashes of the industrial laser seen under the hanger doors won't let me sleep at nights.

For two days now Charlie won't let me near the shop, he tells me he is working on something special.

How dares HE! I own this place, the stables, the training arena, EVERTHING here is MINE! Last night I stole his passkey card and tonight I'm going to see what it's all about…In an hour or two the ruckus will stop and I'll stand alone in my Mech bay.

Well folks, Its time for our summer art contest, Solaris style!

Rules of engagement:

1. All entrants must be registered members, in good standing, with BTU prior to entering the contest.
They must register 3 months before the closing date of the contest.

2. For this contest artists are asked to draw a "Solaris Mech", this could be any of the unique Solaris's Mechs found on TRO3055U, or a customized cannon Mech. You may use all types of weapons and equipment, even "Level 3" from the Tactical manual, Max Tech, Total warfare, Tech Manual, etc...

3. You are allowed to submit up to two entries per person.

4. All artwork must be original and drawn for this contest.

5. The medium is open to your choice: pencil illustrations, CAD work, etc...

6. Scanned images should be at least 600 x 600 at 300 DPI (images will be resized for voting).

7. Entries will be received from 09/05/2010 to 22/06/2010 - 45 days.

8. Submit all entries to both e-mail addresses:
a. shalom_itay_ran@yahoo.com - Itay
b. nauticalparrot@comcast.net - Jeff
please include your real life name and your BTU's screen name
in the e-mail.

Good luck to all, we are here for you.

- Itay & Jeff

Does anyone have any resource as to what a Solaris mech looks like?

I have some ideas but nothing concrete.

A Solaris mech does not have to be a purpose built mech, like a Paladin or a Great Turtle. Any mech can be in the arena.

Jeff is right Zach,

any Mech can be a Solarian, even a canon ver.
However since its all about the show, pilots tend to "upgrade" the
Mech with visual aids for the crowd, like spikes and such.
Some of the battles are fought in closed or enclosed areas, so the
emphasis in on powerful short range weapons, even melee weapons like
claws, saws, swords etc...

Some stables even created special Mechs like the 3 found in "Unbound" and
alot more in TRO:3055U (adds to the original Solaris boxset Mechs).

Hope that helps.

Well hello there,

I must say that I'm abit puzzled about this contest.
In light of our previous contest it was logical to expect a good turnout for
this summer contest aswell...however, 3 weeks had passed and almost nothing.

Whats on your mind folks?
Is it the theme of the contest? Are "real life" getting in the way and you need more time?
Did you get "the BT burnout"? what?

This contest is a great way to enrich our beloved game and our skills.

We really do want to hear what you are thinking.

I would just kick back and enjoy the ride Shalom. 1. People are busy. 2. We still have another BTU contest currently running. 3. Art submissions take a long time to finish. 4. Entries aren't due until June 22nd - so folkes aren't likely to submit quite this early in the game...

1. This is the status quo, the more you do, the more time you have
2. Submission for the mini contest had ended on the 15th of May, now the voting will end too.
We actually took care not to overlap the two contests. We also know that the substantial majority who enters
one type of contest wont enter the other.
3. This goes without saying :D
4. I'm not talking about submissions. I just want to know who will join in.

So people, any takers on this con? :)

Wow thats was fast, a new participant in less then a mintue

If time is the only issue, I'll consider on granting more - Its free after all!
Now, the part that takes the most time for me, even days is the base idea.
Since you think all the time (hopefully) take a few days and toy with the idea.
Then you need about a half an hour to make a raw draft. This could take about
a week. The drawing could take anything from a few hours to 2 days + 1 day break to
look at the final painting and maybe few more hours for finishing touches.
All in all its a week.5 then can be split on a month - Talk about project management.

WELCOME ABOARD Diamond Shark and may the spirit of Kerensky guide you... :D

If I still had a scanner, I'd think about it pretty hard.

Maybe a friend, neighbor or your work place could help?
If not, have you considered experimenting with CGG?

ok ok, so time management thing went out the window, this last 5 weeks, found out i was going to be a dad, moved apartments, while still pulling down 8-10 hour days at work, NBA finals (go lakers!) and the start of the world cup? its been crazy! had nothing done, but took a break on friday night and started doodling................... and in between what ever few miniutes i had.. think i will def have something for the entry! its about 90% finished, so even if i don't get to do the rest, i can hand it in.
this was fun! (and wrecking!) will mail it before tuesday!

thank you for restarting my art stuff!

Hi DS, sorry for not replying sooner, the internet was "acting" on me :?
I did get your pic, and I can say I was impressed by it.
Regretfully, you were the sole enterant (if not including kSeth's Mantis) -
so there isnt really a point in making it a contest.
However, I do have someting in mind, expect a PM in a few days

ha ha, master piece might be bit of a stretch! ha ha!
but definitely was fun to do. had been moving places, so all my stuff was put away, so decided to try a new process. I made a 3 D model of a jenner and a panthers torso in google sketch up, then took a 2-d "snapshot" and exported it out to adobe photoshop, where I added the dirt, smoke rust etc and put the background, which is a photo of the desert near vegas, distorted a little. only about 6-8 hours work done on it, so happy enought with it.

still have the 3-D models, to use again, so might appear in a new picture!

the idea was for a solaris game, the jenner pilot had replaced one of its srm-2's with a lance/ spot welder with extra capacitors. huge amount of damage, but would need to get to point blank range or full contact to use.
